Playing Every Day in May 2015

The month of May was a glorious haze of playful building, dancing, exploring, giant structure making, all inside The Art Space at Leeds Central Library. We developed ideas with many wonderful curious adult community groups and families throughout multiple workshops and drop in sessions. Thank you EVERYONE for coming and being part of the play space in the city centre. We are currently gathering quotes and writing a summary, which will appear on our library blog diary, read it here.

Play Around with Playbods in May

WordPlay – a new project with Leeds Libraries

We are very excited to announce we will be undertaking a month long residency at Leeds Central Library in May 2015, which is part of Leeds Libraries two-year WordPlay project. Wordplay offers many exciting artistic events, performances, exhibitions and workshops inside the newly refurbished The Art Space.

During our Playbods residency we will be collaborating with groups and the general public to explore playfulness and creativity in the library space. We will develop a huge organic nature-inspired installation inside The Art Space, which will stay in situ for people to enjoy until end of May.

Across our workshops and drop-in sessions we will create a multi-sensory, interactive installation and play space for both children and adults. Expect lots of movement challenges, mark making games, soundscape exercises and storytelling activities. The large-scale creation will invite you to immerse your whole body and discover places in which to rest and create your own stories.

The residency consists of artist making days (Saturdays) and public drop-in days (various week days), where public are invited to observe the artist creation process or attend a facilitated creative session. All workshops are FREE and people of all ages and abilities are welcome to play! We hope to see you at The Art Space in May.

Grandparents need to play just as much as their grandchildren!

We’ve been truly inspired by the families who have stepped (and danced!) inside our Hub of Grand Playfulness this August. Twenty families explored, discovered and transformed the space with their ideas, joyful enthusiasm and oodles of energy. Thank you Leeds Inspired for supporting this intergenerational research project. We’re currently reflecting with Age UK Leeds on the project. A full summery of the project with stories of the playful magic which took place, will be up here soon.

Light and Shadow session : giant body shadows up the wall, tracing light pathways from ears to elbows.composit_small

Wind and Water Play session : the sky full with kites and bubbles, drawing with ice between our toes!

The Hub of Grand Playfulness begins!

And so it begins. The Hub of Grand Playfulness at Age UK Leeds bursts into life this week with den making, adventurous drawing and lots of dancing. We’ve had a brilliant time so far, meeting the families and transforming the Age UK Leeds space together with mountains of paper, paint, fabrics, cushions, and a hoop or three!

Two more sessions to go, with lots more play planned. Would you like to join in? Join us for Light and Shadow Play on Friday 9th from 1pm. Or Wind and Water Play on Tuesday 13th from 10:30am! Don’t forget to bring a grandparent! Get in touch or ring 07828261727

The Hub of Grand Playfulness: workshops for grandparents and grandchildren

Four new FREE creative workshops will take place at The Hub of Grand Playfulness, based at the beautiful Age UK building in central Leeds. The creative workshops will focus on active involvement, positive intergenerational exchange, learning and playfulness.

The Hub of Grand Playfulness workshops will be 2.5 hours long, each with 30 minutes either side to relax and enjoy the space. The sessions will take place on the following dates:

Tuesday August 6th, 10:30am – 1pm
Wednesday August 7th, 1pm – 3:30pm
Friday August 9th,  1pm – 3:30pm
Tuesday August 13th, 10:30am – 1pm

Through the creative workshops Playbods artists Kim and Bryony will offer interactive, fun activities for the families to try together such as: storytelling and sculpture with recycled materials, den and landscape building and dance and movement, and each participant will be offered an equally valued, active role.

We aim to engage groups and individual grandparents with grandchildren (children aged from birth to 13 years) within the Woodhouse, Richmond Hill and Little London areas.

And so we would like to hear from you if you work with families in these areas and if you know of groups or individuals who you feel would benefit from being involved in the project.
